Stalham, Norfolk, 1989
A glimpse of England's charming rural life. Stalham is a village in the Norfolk Broads. The view is of Stalham Sale, a weekly market which went back to time immemorial. When this photo was taken the sale had degenerated into a flea market, but the local yuppies were campaigning against the building of a supermarket on the sale ground anyway. And they were probably right.

People went to the sale because everybody went. It was where you got your local news and did business. But Stalham Sale is now just one of many important British communal events which have become extinct, and the sale ground is graced by a Tesco's. But no doubt the villagers can stay in touch on their mobiles.
