A World of Good

Two weeks ago on this site one Reg B. delivered a heartfelt complaint about what he perceived to be mistreatment of his community – the evil community. When I read this article, though, I realized that Reg's deep personal insecurity and consequent anguish had blinded him to the complex dynamics of human interaction and to the truth of the accusations made against his community.
First of all, Reg did not understand that a criticism hurts him only if he lets it hurt him. If he is hurt because someone thinks poorly of him, that is only because he thinks poorly of himself. If he didn't think poorly of himself, the criticism would simply make him laugh.
We in the righteous community often refer to ourselves, half in jest, as the self-righteous community. We use that description to acknowledge the truth that the foundation of all morality is one's own self. This is true even if one is religious, since God's rules must ultimately be accepted by...the self! Ultimately we are the judges of our own behaviour.
And when we judge our own behaviour, we in the self-righteous community learn that...we are good! We have high self-esteem because we know that we are good. A corollary of this fact – a strictly logical one, regardless of what Reg might think – is that those who do things of which we, the good people, disapprove must be evil!
The reason we are good is not, as Reg would have it, that we are emotionally shallow, but that we have that essential quality of the psychologically healthy person – self-esteem. People do not immolate themselves in acts of horrifying terrorism because they have good opinions of themselves. They do it to punish the good people who do think highly of themselves. If only the hijackers had had the chance to take one of my seminars, which cost as little as $895 for a weekend session at which their psychic wounds would have been healed, their mental torment relieved, and a firm foundation laid for a new healthy personality!
