Mr. Rogers Signs Off
by Fred Rogers

Hi, I'm Fred Rogers. You may know me better as Mister Rogers, of television's Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. I retired on September 2, and I'd like to thank everyone for all the accolades I have received on my retirement.

It has been my pleasure to come into your homes every day for the last 38 years to teach your children to feel no qualms about being alone with a friendly neighbour. It's so important to encourage toddlers to be alone with relatives and neighbours who may have some special surprises for them.

That's why I talk to children in the mewling mealymouthed manner you are all familiar with. My principle has been to give the children the impression that they are more intelligent than I am. That quiets any remaining fears they may have. How could they fear the simpleton I appear to be?

I love children. I love to love children. I love loving to love children. And while Fred Rogers has retired, Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood has not. It continues in reruns.

So every day, when it's time for Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, turn on the television for your toddlers and then leave the room. They'll be in good hands.
