On the Decline of Civility
by Jason Capodimonte

You go to the store. None of the staff acknowledge your existence.

You get a telephone call. Buddy pretends he knows you then tries to sell you something.

There is a message on your answering machine. It's somebody perky from Primerica pretending they'd like your help in hiring staff.

You give money to a charity. All of a sudden people from two hundred other charities are calling and pretending they know you.

The bank charges you a penalty for a mistake they made. You point the mistake out to them. They don't rescind the penalty. They may even make an additional service charge for the great trouble they went to of listening to your inquiry.

I got a decline in civility for you right here.

I got one for each of your friends, too.
